Kathy Shuman reports The last of the VBS packages arrived in Kenya.  Kathy had delayed sending them do to the unrest on Kenya.  She is glad they arrived safely.  Pastor Winterle is very appreciative T

Hi, Kathy

The boxes arrived today!!! THANK YOU!!! (in capital letters!!!)

Very nice material to work with the children. They will be happy to have this, and the teachers too.

The set with the Bible stories, memory cards, etc., is very helpful too. The children can say memory verses to the congregation before they go to the Sunday School Class after the sermon. They like to take the microphone and say a Bible verse or sing.

We are well in Kenya. It is going to the normality. Lot of displaced people are going from the camps to their home this week - some Lutheran too. I hope they will have peace in their land. Some of them are little farmers; I visited one of these families.

Lidia and I are beginning to prepare our furlough. Around August 11th we are going to Brazil; our youngest son Paulo will marriage in September, and our daughter Tatiana is expecting a baby for end of August. After this, we are planning to go to the USA to do Fund Raising in October - December to stay two more years in Kenya, God willing.

Say THANK YOU for your congregation and all people who help you to send us this two packages. It will be a blessing for the children.

Note from Kathy to  P.Carlos Winterle

One is filled with Lily wreath crafts.

The other contains;

            Magic cross scratch crafts

Butterfly using pencil craft with foam sheets, decorations, chenille stems, etc.  Be sure to look for the demonstration packet and the shape outlines.

Hopefully you can use them for the children or whatever.

I continue to pray for your safety as well as progress spreading the Gospel message.

It may be sometime before you receive them.

We are supporting a Sudan mission project this VBS year.  Africa seems to weigh heavily on my heart.

Hugs,

Kathy Shuman

Terri Hague tells us:

. . . . my relationship to Tanner - Elaine is a good friend of mine, and she has asked me, and I in turn you, to keep Tanner in our thoughts.  No child should have to deal with diseases of this magnitude but it happens frequently.  Maybe one extra prayer will sway God to help Tanner through this and spare other children.  This seems like "sins of the father (grandfather, great-grandfather, etc) being passed on to the child" for them to suffer.

Previous updates:

Thank you all for keeping Tanner in your prayers.  Tanner is doing pretty well. The week end after chemo he was not feeling good at all but is doing better now. He goes back in April 8 to start another round of chemo and his parents decided no to have him do the radiation.  I have included a message his mom sent to me.

Please continue to pray for Tanner and his family as he starts another round of chemo this next week.

God Bless you and your family,Elaine

Hi,
Thought that I would send you an e-mail update.  Tanner did better with his second round of chemo-he goes in to Lutheran on Tuesday morning and stays until some time Friday. We go again April 8-next week. Then he doesn't feel good during that week-end, better by Monday but then he needs to stay home as his white blood cell count is low. He has it checked and when he is able he goes back to school. He lost his hair but is getting used to that 'look'. Also, we found out that he will not be doing radiation. Paul and I were not feeling good about the side effects for children after talking to the radiologist in Fort Wayne so we did go to IU cancer center in Indy and met with one there. Still we were not sure if it was the right choice for us. Ended up that a pediatric radiologist decided that Tanner has enough toxins in him and would not recommend doing the radiation now. We are going to do the chemo and then he will have scans periodically and if anything shows up we could biopsy- and if need be do the radiation then. That makes sense to us and we were relieved that we chose not to start it when they wanted to.  Hope that things are going well with you. Take care.  Love you.

Terri Hague reports the following update on Tanner Surfus, 10 year old boy from Garrett

Just to let you know that we were called from Riley's Wednesday afternoon and it was set up for Tanner to start his treatments

next week. We went and met with the oncologist at Fort Wayne on Friday. He went over the treatment plan. He will have a port

put in Monday and then start chemo on Tuesday morning,Wednesday, and Thursday and stay over still on Thursday night and

will be sent home sometime Friday. He is going to get 2 types of drugs for the chemo. They said that he will be on a 21 day cycle

schedule as long as he doesn't get any fevers and such. Also, the fourth week into this he will start radiation on the left chest area.

(5 days in a row for 5 weeks) Fortunately they will be doing all of his treatments at Lutheran hospital which is on the south side

of Fort Wayne which is closer than Riley's(Indy). So we will know more how his body is going to react as we go along. During

his chemo treatments he will be staying in the hospital. Hopefully by doing this they will get rid of any cancer cells that may

have been left. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Dave Heierman reports

Thought I would give you a quick update.  It’s been another very stressful week trying to figure out what can/should be done.

Today we expected Terry to be released (at our dismay) following a meeting the Bowen center arranged for the immediate family.

Our prayers were answered!   Thankfully, Terry’s side of the family has also taken a much needed roll in seeing he was NOT released today.

They are pursuing a court order which is expected to take up to a week in hopes to give him the much needed help.

We are all very relieved & thankful to know he will remain safe for now in the facility & hopefully receive much needed medical treatment.

Thanks for the prayers & concerns.  Please continue to pray for Terry & Carol Kuhn, their 6 kids & the entire family during this long &

difficult time.

Terri Hague reports on family:

Since you all were so wonderful when Janette was carrying the twins I wanted to share their pictures.  Again, Thanks for your prayers - God sure made some great grandkids for me!

Hope everyone is well.

Here are some photos of our kids.

Quinn wanted everyone to know that he was not aware that he had bologna on his head when we took his picture - he is so embarrassed.  Grant, on the other hand, was trying to put bologna on his head for the photo.  Funny little guys.

Alana is 7, Grant & Quinn almost 1.5 years old and Victor is 6 months old.

Take care, Miles

This came in response to our $2000 special mission offering.  It is good to know our missionaries are back in Kenya.  Continue to pray for peace.

Dear Kathy,

Thank you so much for your support and prayers for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya and specifically for Uhuru Highway Lutheran Church. Your loving kindness and generosity is a blessing to all.

Pastor and Lidia Winterle have returned to Kenya and we will be there on Sunday. You can read a bit about the agreement that was signed in our Prayer Letter . It was an unfortunate time for all the Kenya folks in western Kenya and the slums. We pray this rival will stop so people can live in harmony. Keep those prayers going for peace.

I have attached our last prayer letter. Do you receive it by email from my husband? My husband sends it from his email so I am not sure if I have given your email to him or not. Let me know and I will make sure we get you on our prayer letter list.

Blessings to you as you serve him where you are planted.

Mitzi Armstrong reports that on Wednesday, Feb 27th, Dick Armstrong had open heart surgery. The surgery was more extensive than anticipated and involved a quadruple by-pass and replacing a leaky valve with a cow valve. The surgery took more than eight hours but as of Thursday Dick was doing well, off the ventilator and sitting up in bed. His color is really good but he is in a lot of pain (thank God for the morphine drip). Mitzi thanks everyone for their prayers and concerns.

Terri Hague reports the following:

This is the message I just recieved from Karen, Tanner's Stepmother.  Please keep all of Tanner's family and friends in your prayers.  Please pray for complete healing of Tanner, strenght and peace for him and his family.
Thank you,
Elaine
Hi,
Just to let you know that on Thursday,Tanner had an echo ekg-that came out good, he had a bone scan done and that was good, he had a cat scan done of the chest and lung area and that came back good, also. The mass was cancer. The pathology reports were sent out and they all agreed on the type of cancer but had conflicting reports on the cancer cell count. The oncologist at Riley's will send the test results from Thursday to them(the other doctor's) and they will confer and make their recommendations for what would be the best treatment plan for Tanner. They feel that the cancer was all removed from the surgery but in case there would be one or two cells left-They want to do chemo. (and possibly radiation) We won't know what they are proposing for another week or so, what type of chemo, etc. but are planning on doing the treatments at Riley's and Lutheran Hospital- they said as much as possible, as they have good communication with Lutheran and they work together. I will keep you updated. Hope that you are keeping warm!
                                                                                       Karen
Please keep Tanner Surfus in your prayers.  He is a 10 year old boy from Garrett.  He is having a second lung surgery today at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indy.

His step-mother, Karen (McFann, Ebersole) is a very good friend of mine all the way back to elementary school.  His father is Paul and his mother Tonya (Sechler) died from breast cancer when Tanner was only 2 years old.

On 1-1-2008 Tanner woke up Paul and complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing.  Paul and Karen took him to DeKalb Hospital in Auburn.  The ER doc took a chest x-ray and said it was abnormal and they would need to do blood work.  Tanner was sent on to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where they removed fluid in his lung.  He also had an infection and treated it with strong antibiotics.  It was determined that he would need surgery so they transferred him to Riley.  He was at Parkview from 1-2-2008 until 1-5-2008.

They admitted Tanner to Riley on Saturday, 1-5-2008, and scheduled surgery for early Monday 1-7-2008.  In that surgery they removed his lower left lobe and a wedge of the upper left lobe.  The entire mass was removed.  A CT scan was done of his entire body and there are no other masses.

The reason he is having surgery today is: when the body is healing it creates fluid.  He had a chest tube to drain the fluid and it was removed when no more fluid was draining.  There must have been some in there and it has started to gel.  Because of that they are having trouble keeping the lung inflated.  It needs to be addressed now so it can be reversed and Tanner will have that lung capacity.

They do not know the results yet of what the mass is.  They said it can take 2-3 weeks to know exactly what it is.  They don’t want to tell Paul and Karen the wrong information.  A sample was also sent to the Mayo Clinic for diagnosis.

Tanner broke his collar bone 2 ½ years ago and the doctor reviewed that x-ray and the mass showed up on that x-ray.  It was noted as a possible lung contusion.  The size of the mass they removed was the size of a baseball.  Karen did not say what size the growth was 2 ½ years ago, but if it was anything substantial it would have been investigated.  They don’t know what this mass is, but for some reason it got infected and caused problems.

Please pray for Tanner that this is not anything life threatening.  Pray for successful healing and complete recovery.  Please pass on to any prayer chains.

Thank you and God bless you and your family,

Elaine Baidinger Kleeman

Thank you to the CLLC Sunday School students, Alpha group, High School youth, and teachers for taking part in the Return of Souper Can skit on Souper (Super) Bowl Sunday, 2/3/08.  Was this the first time that many did the wave?  Souper Can and his quarterbacks, Preston Retcher and Mason Thomas, were certainly a highlight.  Thank you for your donations which will be matched by Thrivent and given to Project Help.  Writing a check?  Make it out to CLLC  (mark it/memo Souper Bowl).

The PowerPoint depicting the Clear Lake Lutheran church history is probably not going to be available on the website.  We have 50MB of space provided in the package price.  We are using 43 MB of that already and the PowerPoint program is 147MB which would put us up around 200MB.

If you are interested in the PowerPoint, please email Kathy Shuman bkshuman@mchsi.com and she would be happy to mail it to you.  Also DVD’s with VBS program and CD pictures are available as well (since 2004).
